Veterans as Volunteers
This project started with the help of Sport England’s ‘Opportunity Fund’ which aims to encourage people to volunteer to help tackle challenges their communities face.
Working in partnership with Valley Leisure and Veterans in Action, Unity has recruited military veterans as volunteers in sport and physical activity, harnessing the skills learned during their service to help people of all ages get more active. They are not just thinking about active coaching (although we know that this is an area of interest to many veterans) but a whole range of skills, including IT, engineering, construction, driving, first aid – anything that can be useful to a sports or physical activity venture. This project has been running for more than two years but will shortly be coming to an end.
This is a new project that is due to start in the near future. Building on the success of “Veterans as Volunteers” this project will be harnessing the range of skills learnt in the military to help people of all ages connect with the historical and natural heritage that is so abundant in this region and local communities. Positive Pathways will also help integrate ex-military personnel into civilian life.
Opportunities will be varied and will be matched to individual skills and aptitudes and will grow as the project develops, for example:
- Visitor information
- Help to develop publicity materials (including digital)
- Restoration work using technical skills
- Logistical help in managing visitor experience
- Driving or transport work
If you’re an armed forces veteran and would like to know more, send an email to request further information.
This project is managed in partnership with Housebuilder and Landlord Aster Group and is aimed at tenants of Aster properties. Tenants will be able to access the Aster volunteering portal, finding a multitude of volunteering opportunities in the areas that they reside in. These will be generic opportunities as we will liaise with local CVS and Volunteer Centers. If you’re an Aster tenant , send an email to get involved.
